My iPad new mail ringtone stopped sounding with new email. Solutions?

The ringtone is still on iPad. It plays when I select it but does not play when new mail arrives. Just before it quit it played a few seconds. I checked sounds, rebooted and reset. This happened just before the latest update so I downloaded update hoping that would fix the problem.

change to something else... reboot... see if that works... change back to desired tone... reboot... see if it takes.

No such luck. I decided I better register with this group too. I realized that I had not tested other times. No tone sounds with new email. And in testing sound co trol, the tunes only play about quarter of tune. However when you test through ringtone section the full tune plays. Is there something with my volume link?
