You should be able to use the cable to transfer the photos into iTunes, then you can bring up the options on a photo (right click on windows, command click on Mac), and then choose to open in location on windows, or open in finder on Mac. That will show you where the photos are stored. But you should be able to find it in windows explorer on windows or finder on Mac under photos.

If you don't want to use iTuses, you can connect iPhone to PC by Cable, and use iFunbox tool to copy correctly...

I use a programsoftware called DiskAid ( now imazing) to copy paste. It is a paid program software
In Mac, you can import into iphotos directly free of cost.
In windows, earlier, you could see the phone as an external drive and copy paste the camera roll, unfortunately that seems to have changed.
