Why can't I turn my iPhone 5 back on after a battery discharge because of high temperature status?

Phone would not turn on or do anything with power button and turn off buttons depressed. I didn't realize the battery had discharged when it got hot. Plugged it in to the car charger and the Apple screen comes on and starts flashing off and on at random. It only goes as far as the Apple screen.

Let it charge undisturbed in a relatively cool place for a couple hours...

How will I know if it is charging or not? The Apple screen continues to flash while it is plugged in to charge. It doesn't stay turned off while it is plugged in. When I plug it in to charge, the Apple screen comes up without being manually turned on by pressing power and off/on button.
