Is the icloud mandatory on the iphone 5?

I am acquiring a hand me down iPhone 5. Is it required or automatically installed once I activate the phone under my AT&T account.

Not mandatory at all... you can chose to not set it up and not use it at all...

Yep just don't activate it! And if it's already activated, just delete the content and turn it off!
