Where do the recent contacts under (new Text messages) new message come from?

I went to type a new text message and noticed that there are several numbers saved as "recent". Some of these numbers, i have never text some of these numbers. I noticed that i can delete these out, however how recent do these number have to be to be included under this number 1, and number 2 is there any other reason they could be saved under this unless i have texted or called that number from this phone? Thanks

Recent contacts are just that... May have been by phone, email, or messages...

Those in recents are not all contacts. Only non contacts will have that option to delete. It can be from a call, text or email, as was stated above.
