Can't charge iPhone 5 while turned off?

I can't charge my iPhone 5 while it's turned off but it works when it's turned on...help please ...iOS 8.1.2
Or aren't u able to charge iPhone 5 when turned off?

Do you mean when the phone is actually powered off, or the screen is locked?

I never turn mine off. So I have not tested whether it can be charged while "off". Is there a particular reason why you are turning it off?

If you connect the charger while it's on turn off the phone as it's charging and it will be charging while it's off.

that is what i am doing but the screen is all black when i have turned it off and nothing happens when i press the home button is it supposted to look like that? i thought it was supposted to show up a battery thingy when its turned off?

i have the same problem. when my phone is turned off, and i plug the charger, the phone was turned on automatically and then start charging.

is it normal ?because there was no off screen with only battery icon.

If your phone is powered down, it will turn on the second you start charging it. This is normal behavior.

If you're already charging and turn of the phone, it will keep charging but not so fast as when the phone is on. This is by design to protect from overcharging.
