mac mini running a monitor via hdmi cable

My mac mini is 2011 vintage and I tried to use my LED TV as a monitor by driving it via a HDMI cable direct from the Mac to the TV. It will notwork. I tried it on two seperate TV's with the same results. Whats wrong?

I have my Mac Mini connected to my Sony Bravia TV with an HDMI cable. It works perfectly. What are you seeing on the TV? Any error messages? Make sure that you have the correct input setting on the TV. Have you tried swapping the HDMI cable?
