After restoring, everything has returned except my apps. Why?

I backed up my iPhone4 to itunes, and then used the relevant restore option during the setup process. My Contacts and Messages have been restored, however none of the apps that I purchased have come across. What have I done wrong?

Do you see them on the screen at all, are you one wifi? try a hard reboot, hold in both buttons until the Apple logo comes up.
