Are you sure you've set the phone up to do it? Is 'do not disturb' turned on? Is the phone in 'silent' with the switch on the side?

Edit to add... is the volume turned up?

I have the same issue with my iPhone 5C since the last iOS update. If my phone goes to sleep, I get no audible notification when I get texts.
