What is "send as sms" in iMessage Settings

Do I have to Switch send as sms on? What is the Benefit? What is the default Setting in iOS 8

SMS is your standard text messaging. Anyone not using an iOS device with iMessage uses SMS.

That setting is there for this: you have send an iMessage to an iPhone user but for some reason the message isn't delivered. If that feature is on, the iMessage will be delivered as standard text message without your having to taking any action.

If that feature is set off, you will have to manually select the 'send as text message' option from messages app itself

Up until iOS 7 I think this feature was turned on by default. However, since iOS 8 I noticed it's been disabled. I'm not entirely sure though. Several people I know, including myself, have gotten new iPhones this year and have had it disabled when received. I keep the option off because I send international iMessage texts myself.
