Brand new ipad - Says it's sending verification email/link, but it never shows up

3rd day of messing with this! The email account is working - receiving emails from other places. Anything I can try before I just return the darn thing? My wife was totally excited and surprised by this gift, and she hasn't been able to use it yet!
