Why can't I sign into iCloud?

Cannot sign into iCloud

I bought my husband an iPad several years ago & he still doesn't know much about it. Recently he keeps having this annoying pop-up saying "Sign into iCloud, enter Apple ID password". He has forgotten his Apple ID password & cannot reset because an old, obsolete e-mail is shown. If he resets all settings, he will lose everything in contacts, etc. Is there anything he can do?

There should be an option on the desktop iCloud website for "forgot password"
