How do I retrieve old calendar entries on my iPhone?

Loss of old calendar entries on my i-phone since i cloud

I have an i-phone 5 and an ipad. Since I set up cloud I have lost all my old calendar notes which I keep as an important business journal on both the ipad and the iphone.

How do I retrieve them?
Should I not sync? Should I disconnect form icloud?

check your settings- mail contacts calendars then scroll all the way to the bottom and see what you have set for how far back to sync. I am not sure how to retrieve once gone

Where were those Calendar Notes before? Calendar app? Notes app?
