Why is whatsapp charging me

I have an iphone 6 and have recently moved from the US to france. I currently have my phone always on airplane mode and use wifi. This being said verizon just contacted me and alerted me to $30 in charges (and possibly more) because of the application. Any help on how to avoid charges would be appreciated.

What's app is a free application. And Verizon wouldn't contact you about getting charged. Did you receive a phone call? Sounds like a scam. I hope you didn't give them any information

True that. You don't have any cellular data usage abroad, and even if you had, it would show up in your settings under "Roaming"



Because this is not the case, it's likely that a scammer tried to take advantage of you.
