Why am I not getting IOS update notification on the General Icon

It used to be when there was an IOS update there appeared a small round red notification symbol on the top righthand corner of the General Icon. Whilst this still happens on my wifes mini ipad, it is no longer the case with my iPad3. I have recently upgraded to IOS 8.1.2.

There is no notification icon because there is no upgrade available. iOS 8.1.2 is the latest version released by Apple.
