How long do deleted photos stay in memory on iPhone 4?

My daughter deleted some photos that she mistakenly thought were backed up. Considering the photos were deleted a few months ago, is it possible to retrieve them? I've tried a couple of retrieval apps on the web, but they don't seem to work. Can't seem to find out if this is because of the iOS software or perhaps because they've been overwritten as this is only an 8GB version?
