Virtual Private Network... Nothing to worry about unless you need to use it for a work connected device...

Nowadays, VPN is a convulated term for many things.

The main idea with VPNs is to use an underlay Network in order to build a Virtual Overlay network.
The underlay is usually the internet or the physical network that is used for packet forwarding.
VPNs is therefore a general terminology that refers to the different way to build a Virtual network.
