Default How to jailbreak an iPhone 3G?

I bought an iPhone 3G on ebay.
Unfortunately it has a sim-lock whereby I can't use it.

So I tried to jealbreak it to remove this lock.
Therefore I took the latest version of redsn0w (0.9.15) and used the iOS firmeware 4.2.1

But after entering the DFU mode nothing happened - the screen stayed black.
So I used another (older) version of redsn0w (0.9.6) and tried it again.

This time it seemed to work: commands were visible / got executed on the iPhone.
Suddenly the process stopped and didn't continue. After rebooting I recognized the jailbreak failed.

The last lines before the jailbreaking process stopped were:
    ** Checking volume information
** The volume Data appears to be OK.
    Mounting rootfs as read-write...
    Mounting devfs...
    Mounting disk02s...
    Transfering control to jailbreak...
    dyld: Library not loaded: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileKeyBag.framework/MobileKeyBag
    Referenced from: /jailbreak
    Reason: image not found

Does anyone have an idea why the jailbreak failed and how I can fix this?

Update thru iTunes. What u need is an unlock NOT jailbreak to use a different carrier.
