Why is there a exclamation mark when I try to type a name on my phone?

my imessage is not working

when i try to text a iphone or any other apple prouduct ill type there name and it will show up read with a read explaimation mark next to it help please!!!

Make sure you have iMessage turned on and that you're in a good data or wifi area
