Why isn't the trash can highlighted when i'm trying to delete photos and videos?

"trash can" not highlighted when Im trying to delete photos and videos

I followed the directions from here on how to delete photos and videos in bulk, after it said to select then click trash can but it is not hightlighted.

If those items were synced with iTunes, you may have to use iTunes to delete them from your device.
