Why isn't my iTunes getting recognized by my iPod?

my i tune does not recognize the ipod

if the ipod is connected to the pc, the i tune fails to pick the ipod. As a result, all my music and videos have been lost.

Couple of questions. Has the ipod been paired to any other PCs? This can be an issue as an ipod can only pair with 1 PC. Also is your PC a work PC, or on a home network that has a strict firewall or any kind of IT policy? I can not sync iOS devices on any of my office PCs due to this. Did you get any kind of message from itunes? What did it say?
