Can I receive text fro non iPhone users when using imessaging

My friend texted me but my iMessage was turned off on my phone so it went to my iPad at my house, not to my phone in my hand. My daughter does not have iPhone. My deleama is: turn it on or off. Get messages from my best friend or my daughtry? Must I choose?
