Why won't my iPad Mini won't download iOS 8?

My ipad mini won't download ios 8

So my Ipad mini does not give me the opportunity to upgrade to 8. I did restart etc. When I go to software update in settings I get the message "Unable to Check for Update." Months now. My apps are working, but a new problem is when I get an update notice in Applications and go to update, it simply opens the program I am trying to update. Any ideas about what's going on?

Do it through iTunes. I'm assuming you haven't done that yet or you would have mentioned it...restore the iPad through your computer and iTunes and that SHOULD bypass whatever the issue is with OTA.
