How can I access unread imessages from a phone with a broken screen?

The screen broke on my phone, but I can still feel messages being received, I thought when i activated a new phone the unread imessages would automatically come over, but they didnt. How can I access the unread messages from the old phone?

Did you restore from backup? If not, just restore from a previous backup. They should transfer as long as your Apple ID remains the same.
