Without knowing more about your exact problem, here are a few generic ideas that may help you.
Does your device make any sounds at all? Make sure the mute switch on the side isn't engaged and make sure your volume is up to full for both media and notifications by going to Settings > Sounds > Ringer and Alerts slider to the right.
On the same screen, just below this, make sure you have a tone allocated to whatever notification you want.
Then go to Settings > Notifications and make sure the particular app is allowed to send you notifications. Tap on the app and ensure that the Allow Notifications slider is to teh right and that Notification sounds has a tone associated to it. Also make sure 'Show on Lock Screen' is enabled and possibly below that make sure that either Banners or Alerts are enabled.

Make sure the MUTE switch is off. It?s on the left side of the phone, above the volume buttons. If you can see ORANGE, flip the switch up.
