Can I delete a message without having to open the Messages app?

Can I delete a message from my iphone from the screen it came in on, without unlocking and actually opening message?

Although you can dismiss and reply from the lockscreen. Unfortunately your unable to delete the message

You can set it in Settings>Messages>Keep Messages to delete all messages over 30 days old automatically. Any you wish to save, you can turn iMessage off, then email the message/messages to yourself, then turn iMessage back on.

Also if you wish you can now with iOS 8 turn on Do Not Disturb for individual message threads
