The Seagate wireless plus app on my IPADAIR tells me to connect my wireless plus to the internet and upgrade the firmware? anyone hear of this before

That sounds suspicious unless it is detecting that there is an available iOS 8 update and you are still running an older iOS version.

Not specifically on this particular device... But it's not unheard of for a device's app to manage firmware on connected devices.
