How do I register a contact with iMessage?

I need to register an iPhone number of a friend in iMessage. Not obvious how to do so.

If your friend has an iCloud account, he or she can simply sign in to iCloud on their device and then enable iMessage. The phone number will automatically be registered, so to speak. At that point he or she needs to go to Settings - Messages - Send & Receive and then select the phone number.

You don't register contacts in iMessage. If they have an iOS device they are most likely on iMessage. You need to create the contact with their phone number. That's it!
