Restore jailbroken iphone 3GS

Hi, this looks like a nice group and I am low-tech and in need of some support please!

I lost my iPhone 5, and am waiting to buy the 6 on Sept. 9 -- meanwhile, I pulled out my old iPhone 3GS and got a new SIM card hooked up with my current plan. I had this phone jailbroken 3 years ago when I moved from Canada to the US (I am now back in Canada and with the original provider). The phone was jailbroken with the original 3GS iOS.

My phone initially worked with the new SIM, but when I plugged it into my computer, iTunes starting updating things, and I accidentally deleted my whole phone, and started upgrading the software. It came to the final step in the process where I get a warning that it cannot be activated...

I have spent two days reading forums and googling how to fix my phone but can't find anything that specifically works for my situation.

Whats the original carrier of the device and are you using a nano sim?

The original (and current) carrier is Telus. I don't know what a nano SIM is -- they put it in for me at the store a couple days ago.
