After disabling iMessage, I still cannot send or receive texts message to certain contacts. Why?

I recently traded in my iPhone 4S for a Galaxay S5. Before trading, I turned off my imessaging on my phone. I still can't receive nor send texts to certain contacts. When trying to send, I get a message that reads "invalid recipient". Anyone that has an iPhone now, I don't see their responses. I still have an iPad as well as an ipod that is on my apple account. Please help!
