Are iMessages still free when sending photos or videos?

I understand there is no data charges for texts. If photo or video is sent also, is there data charge? I am new to iMessage but plan to buy an iphone and have an ipad already, so data is verty important. thanks for any help.

Actually you will be charged for data usage when using iMessage unlike SMS. IOS iMessage service is data based

No data $ charges for iMessage as long as it is between iDevices. If you text with someone who's using an Android phone, you may be charged by your carrier. You will, however, use data when not on wifi. And no charge for sending photos or videos to another iDevice. But again, that will use data when not on wifi. So keep in mind your data plan too.
