How can I view email notifications when the phone's in sleep mode?

When I receive mail, I would like to see notification of that on my phone when it is in sleep mode. How do I do that?

Go to Settings - Notifications - Mail - (your email account) then select "Alerts" as well as the "Show on Lockscreen" option.

No. The "Alerts" option does not need to be on....
