Is it possible to add music to the iphone directly without doing it via the PC? Like downloading an MP3 and just play it on the music player.

While I'd say "Yes, you can buy right from iTunes and they'll download right to your iOS device" I somehow doubt that is what you meant... If you mean downloading in other ways, it used to be possible, but Apple removed those types of apps. You could look at something like Spotify though, it downloads them for offline mode.

Upload the .mp3 files to a music storage site like Google Play or another cloud storage site and then download them to your iPhone using an associated app.

Use any one of these instead of iTunes:
Dropbox
CopyTrans Manager
SongBird
WinAmp (not sure whether this one still works)
MediaMonkey

Thanks. I did not realize I could even access music from external storage without iTunes. Just tried it with GoodReader and it worked.
