that depends on what you want to use it for? Do you need to be connected to the internet if you want to use the internet... I guess so. For the basic functions (alarm as you say in the headline) of course not. If youre on holiday somewhere outside your country Internet can be costly, so you may wanna turn off mobile data in settings and rely on WiFi in your hotel/public WiFi spots for your internet needs.
