Why is my Facebook notifications not working properly?

hi
when i log in to my facebook, the little earth symbol will show the red flag with the number of notifications, but as soon i click on it, it tells me "no new notifications".
this has happened several times now.
what exactly is that and how can i fix it?

Have you checked to see if you have posts waiting to be allowed on your Timeline?
