Why are my Hotmail contacts disappearing one by one?

Please tell me how to fix this issue. My contacts keep disappearing, one by one. My email address is hotmail, so it shows up as Outlook in the settings. Everything was working fine until I synched the new ipad-mini with my contacts. But now when I send a text to a contact, the name appears, I type my message and hit send. THEN the phone # appears on the text and no more name. After that I cannot find the name in my contacts anymore. This only happens for some names. Please help. I need some step by step instructions on how to fix this because I am not very techy. THANKS!

Are they still on the server?
Are they disappearing on your new iPad as well?
Have you tried resyncing the account?
