iphone 4s using alot of data

Is there anything I can do to stop my phone fro using so much data? I got an alert that Im over 50% I think I must not have been connected to wifi at work. So, what can I do now to get through the month without having to buy more data? Do apps use data?

Go to Settings > Cellular and turn off Cellular Data for most apps until the end of the month.

Only keep it active for essential apps.
