Limiting maximum # of Messages?

Is there a way on an iPhone (most recent iOS version) to limit the maximum # of Messages/Texts that are saved, ? Android has this feature, but I don't see anything in the 'Message' app settings.

All of my pone storage is taken up by Messages,and I have to go through and delete them. I would rather not have to do this again.

The only thing you can do is block all messages, but you can not set a limit. UNLESS this is something you can get your carrier to do on their level. There is no device setting for this. At least none that I could find.
