Which country are you going from and to?

Do you have a CDMA or GSM phone as different parts of the world use different radio systems.

You'll need to let your carrier know you are going abroad and either disable your roaming or enable it, depending on your preference, what your carrier says and the relative costs of using your phone abroad.

A GSM SIM card that's unlocked for international use or a SIM card from the local provider in the country you will be traveling to. Other than that, you will be good to go in regard to email, iMessages, web browsing and video chatting as long as you have at least a Wi-Fi connection.

It depends on the carrier. Verizon sells the 5s factory sim unlocked, but att and tmobile are locked though can be unlocked if you meet their requirements.
