Can't connect iPhone 5S to iTunes

While attempting to connect to iTunes I plug i my iPhone and nothing happens. iTunes should pop up but doesnt, and am unable to find the device in iTunes. I'm on Window 8 using iTunes 11. Can anyone offer any assistance?

Make sure the device is powered on. Try a different USB cable. Make sure it is securely connected. Try initiating iTunes to see if it will then detect your iPhone.
