Hands free volume adjustment

Hello iMore!
I wish to reduce the volume level when utilizing the hands free option on my iPhone 4S device.
It's way too loud, and the conventional (side of device) buttons only reduce to a certain level, but not enough.
I've been into Settings and turned down the Ringer volume control thinking it may help, but no joy.
Are you able to assist please?

Is there not volume control mechanism associated with the hands-free device?
