iphone 4S shut off & wont restart!

I have an iphone 4S that unexpectedly shut down (I don't think the battery was dead) & now after plugging it in for over 1 1/2 hrs. wont charge or turn on. I don't even get the red charge battery picture coming up. I've also tried to plug it in to the computer & still nothing. Has anyone ever had this happen & what can I do?

I hate to sat it does sound that way but I would give it another try by hooking it up to your computer with an Apple charging cord and see if it comes up at all or can you see it in My Computer?
