OS X Mavericks issue

I have a Mac lab and have updated all of them to Mavericks. I am experiencing some issues with different accounts. On some accounts, not all and not consistently, applications will not open. Sometimes the Finder will not even open. I spoke to Apple about this and their patch is to create a dummy account that remains open and to then sign in to the account for working. Has anyone experienced the same problem and have you found a different way to fix it?

No, never. Is the operating system up to date as well as all the apps?

I have never experienced anything like that on any OSX version honestly...much less Mavericks. I've had Finder hang sometimes, but it closes out after a few seconds and resets.
