USB OTG Adapter Cable for iPad 4

I've bought this item and tried four different flash drives with it. Two said the accesory wasn't supported, the other two said the accessory could not be used because it used too much power.
Do I have to use specific flash drives, software or some kind of external power for the flash drive?

External Flash storage is not supported for any use other than camera kits.
