My iPad 2 will not update past iOS 5.1.1

I have an iPad 2 which is saying it is up to date at ios 5.1.1. It will not offer me an update to 6.1, but many apps need 6.1 or higher....

You could try restoring it, which will force it to download the latest update. Make sure you backup your iPad before restoring it so that you can keep your data.

Since the latest version of iOS for the iPad 2 is the ever popular iOS 7.0.4, that’s the only place you can go. Apple no longer "signs" (verifies the installation of) versions prior to iOS 7.0.4 for your iPad. You cannot install iOS 6.x unless you previously had it installed, were jailbroken and saved your SHSH blobs (the Apple 'signature' that verifies your install).

If you have the iPad 2 the latest iOS version is 7.0.4 which is the only version you can restore to currently. If your iPad is saying iOS 5.1.1 is the latest version then you might have the iPad 1.
