iphone messenger: showing when a person was last online

So, underneath the persons name, sometimes it shows you when they were last online. i.e. Online Now, Active 2 min. ago, Active 5 hrs. ago.

Sometimes it doesn't show anything. Can you tell me why sometimes it doesn't tell me when they were last online? Is there a time cut-off? For example, if they haven't been online for 6 hours or longer, it doesn't show anything under their name? Any help you can offer would be appreciated.

Are you talking about the built in Native Message App on iPhone? If so I have never seen that it lets you know when the last time someone was online.
