When I power up my iPad Air the Apple Logo comes up like it should then the lock screen only comes up for a second or less so I can't swipe it fast enough to get to the home page. The lock screen just disappears. I have to hit the sleep/wake or home button to bring the lock screen back up so I can swipe it. Have others found this situation with the iPad Air. I have an iPad 2 and it does not happen at all. The Apple store checked it out. One rep said to me this is unusual and had a tech check it out and they said this is normal, they are trying to save the battery. If the iPad is supposed to be user friendly, why this extra step to get to the lock screen? Are other owners of the iPad Air having the same problem? If so, what have you done to correct it? One Apple rep suggested reseting the ipad; (holding down the sleep/wake and the home button at the same time until the apple logo appears) however, that did not work it still does the same thing. So, that is not the problem. I am beginning to think it is a glitch in the operating system code, but apple does not want to admit it. Or, is this normal for the new iPad Air's as Apple claims?

It's normal behavior and I've had every iPad except the retina mini. As soon as it is powered on, the screen goes to sleep to conserve power. Works as designed to me as I often power it on and then go do something else and pick it up later. I wouldn't want the screen on the whole time. However if I'm actually watching it, that few seconds between booting up and the screen turning off is more than enough to swipe to unlock.

Thank you for your quick reply. However, the swipe screen does not stay on long enough for me to swipe it the first time. It immediately goes off in less than a second. On my iPad 2 it stays on for around 5 or 6 seconds more than enough time to swipe it. After the 5 or 6 second interval then the screen goes off which is what I would want it to do to conserve the battery, but going off in less than a second does not seem right. My grandaugther has just received an Apple Air and she told me that her swipe screen does not go off in less than a second. It stay on at least 5 seconds and gives her enough time to swipe it to get to the home page. I do not understand why there should be a difference bewteen hers and mine?

    Restore it in iTunes.

I think this is a common problem with all A7 devices cause my 5S also does that when I boot it up but my iPod touch doesn't on iOS 7.

I don't think his issue is what you are referencing though...I haven't ever seen what he is discussing on any iOS device I have ever have, much less my newer ones.

To SeanHRCC: Thank you for your reply, but I do not think a restore would solve the problem. This situation happened right out of the sealed box even before I put apps on the unit. When I took the Ipad Air to the Apple store the tech support people did not even suggest a restore otherwise they would have done it at that time.

So you're saying you went to the Apple store with a genius bar appointment and left with your iPad Air still not functioning properly? That seems awful hard to believe.

A restore usually fixes about 90% of the hiccups people experience with iOS when it starts acting like this. Not to say it's a guarantee, but it has a pretty significantly successful track record. To be honest with you, if you're unwilling to try it...good luck with it, because that's about the only thing we'll be able to suggest for you. If you don't want to bother with a restore, have it replaced at the store...an iPad Air's are all still covered under their initial year warranty.

If the apple store tech said it was normal I would tend to agree. I would bring it back to the store and try out some of the display ones and see if they act the same. If they don't ask to have it replaced

    Follow up to my problem:
I followed SeanHRRC's sugestion and did a restore after speaking with an Apple rep and to no avail the problem sitll exists. The recent Apple rep at the store as the previous one I spoke with and showed him the problem said he has not seen this at all and sugessted that I make another appointment with a genuis bar tech which I did. I have an appointment next Wednesday to see if they can figure out what the problem is. I do not buy Apple's line that it does this to conserve the battery, for the lock screenon all my other mobile products only stays on fo rabout 5 seconds to begin with. All my other Apple mobile products do not do this. I am beginning to wonder if Apple got a bad shipment of iPad Air's from China and they just do not want to admit it until there are enough complaints. At the suggestion of one of the Apple reps I emailed Apple with feedback, but I never, to this date, heard back from them. As I stated in an earlier post my grandaughter has a new iPad Air and hers does not have this problem at all. I thank all of you who have responded to my post for your thoughts. I truly appreciate your help.

I think all iPad airs were purchased within Apple's holiday return period which would be ending very soon. So at the worst, return it and get a different one.

    Update:

Just wanted to let those who have been following my post on this site the outcome of my visit to the Apple store today. I showed the Apple Specialist the problem as I did previously to other Specialists and even an Apple Manager and they all agreed that the disappearance of the unlock screen should not happen. There should be enough time for you to swipe that screen to get to the home page. Without any questions they gave me a new iPad Air and before I left they booted the new one up to make sure that my problem as described in this thread did not hhappen with the new iPad Air. Believe if or not it happend again with the new iPad Air. The Specialist then took the new iPad to the back where the techs are and he spent over 40 minutes back there. When he came back he appologized for the wait and told me they ran many tests on servers and so forth and they found that there is a glitch in the operating system which was not caught. He told me that I was the first one at this Apple store to bring it to their attention and that they believe that Apple will correct it with a later operating system version. I asked why my ganddaughters iPad Air and the Apple Managers Mini iPad with Retina did not have this problem and he said that some of the products for whatever reason which can not be explained at this time do not have the problem, but it is a software problem. In fact he said this problem it beginning to show up on Youtube. So, Apple is definitely knows the problem exists. Once agai, I thank those who tried to help me.

Oh good, I not the only one who noticed this.

Did you mention that the same issue applies to the 5S as well?

There is no glitch with the operating system or this would be a common problem. I'm not trying to call you a liar Ron, but it simply doesn't make sense that you would be told it was an issue with the OS if the issue is so uncommon it's not even showing up on the Apple forums (I searched and couldn't even find one). Your situation is certainly unique, and seems to be quite annoying, but there is no operating system issue. It sounds like a bad batch of iPad Airs honestly...the one we had before my wife returned it and got a retina mini was flawless.

I am only reporting what the Apple secialist told me. I guess time will tell when they come out with an updated OS system version. If it still persists with the new update I will bring the iPad Air back to Apple for another replacement.

And I completely understand what you're saying...it's just a strange thing when most people aren't experiencing this "glitch" to be associated with a general problem with the OS, know what I mean?

    Another update:

After receiving a reply form SeanHRCC I decided to call Apple Care one more time. I first spoke to an advisor and he asked if I would like to speak to a Senior Advisor and I indicated that would be a good idea. After I went through and discussed the problem in detail he asked if I would like him to document what we discussed and pass it on to the Apple engineers. I indicated that would be appropriate. He indictated it would take between 24 and 48 hours to get a reply from them. This morning I revceived and email from the Senior Advisor which I copied and pasted below for all to see Apple's response to the problem:

Apple has received reports of this behavior. Those reports are under investigation. The results of the investigation may come in the form of an update, a knowledge base article, or some combination of the two. The customer should be encouraged to keep up to date.

This is what I received from the Engineers. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

    Thank you,
    Chris Armenta
    Senior Advisor Apple Care

So, here is were we stand at this point in time. I hope this clarifies the situation to date. At least Apple is definitely aware there is a problem and according to their response to me they are working on it. Hope this explanation helps some of you who are having the same problem..

I have the same problem but with my iPhone 5S. The weird part is it only happens at start up, after that it works fine.
