I cannot get into the home screen as I cannot close/remove an advert for Candy Crush which is over the screen.

Double click home button and close the application out by swiping up. Or do a reset - Hold home button and stand by button down together until the device reboots

Sounds like its a pop up add in safari- I would close safari reboot then go to settings- safari and clear cookies
