just got 5s phone and can't text. it won't let me turn on iMessage and sms/mms together. help

what happens when you try to turn it on? Is it greyed out? Have you tried a hard reset? How is the service/wifi signal where you are?

1. Reboot the iPhone 5S
2. Go to Settings-Messages and then try to enable iMessage.

If it's greyed out, a restore might be your only choice.
