upgrade unlocked iphone4 from 4.3.5 to 6.1

I am sure this is an amateur question, but how do I upgrade unlocked iphone4 from 4.3.5 to 6.1? I am pretty sure I have the most current version of iTunes, but I am not sure how to tell.

I guess you could always download the iOS 6.1 software and update it manually.

If they still allow that as an option.
